The LEGO Set That Has Sparked A Modding Craze

If you fondly remember your first grey-brick handheld console, this set is pure homage. LEGO and Nintendo have teamed up to recreate the original Game Boy in brick form: a near 1:1 scale replica of the iconic handheld.

What we love

For gamers & builders alike
It sits beautifully at the intersection of video game nostalgia and adult LEGO building.

Display appeal
While it doesn’t function as a console (no yet… – more on this soon!), the detailed design turns it into an art piece.

Conversation piece
Whether you loved playing Game Boy as a kid (or adult!), this model taps into that warm, emotional nostalgia.

Smart size & piece count
421 pieces is a manageable build, it’s not overwhelming but still substantial enough to feel special.

But can it play games?

Well Yes (but she needs some work)
Out of the box there is no way to actually play Nintendo Gameboy games on the Lego Gameboy but that hasn’t stopped the ever tinkering modding community.

Natalie the Nerd, looked at this non-functional LEGO Game Boy and said, “challenge accepted.” She’s turned it into a fully working handheld that plays real Game Boy cartridges.

Her build cleverly fits the guts of a Game Boy Pocket into the LEGO shell, complete with working buttons, a proper cartridge slot, and a crisp screen. It’s not just a display piece anymore but a brick-built blast from the past that actually boots up games.

Even better? Natalie’s making it even easier for everyone else to join the fun by releasing a LEGO Game Boy Mod Kit priced around AUD $120 (USD $80) so you can transform your LEGO set into a playable handheld too. What a legend!
